Newsletter Features NYT Bestseller Lisa Gardner! Photo, Lisa Gardner

NYT bestseller Lisa Gardner looks too sweet to write churn-your-guts thrillers. But readers and reviewers know she consistently crafts stories that would make Hitchcock cringe.   All twelve of her suspense novels are emotionally-charged, read-em-with-the-lights-on, page-turners.

Book cover, The NeighborTHE NEIGHBOR, 2009, recently won Best Hardcover from International Thriller Writers.  Lisa's writing in LIVE TO TELL, 2010, is so viscerally empowering, when a character's heart races, you'll grab your chest.Book cover, Live to Tell

Immersion Master Classes for 2010

Are you interested in three full days of intense Deep Editing, hands-on learning, in my log home at the top of a Colorado mountain? Class members stay at a lodge next door to my home.

Photo on Stairs

Meet the Immersion Masters from August, 2010, the uber-talented and uber-committed (from left to right) Angela Foster, Betty Booher, Cindy Kiel, Miriam Allenson, Maggie Lynch, and Usha Menon. Note the EDITS System colored socks sticking through the rails. I put down my Deep Editing whip and allowed them a few moments of levity.  :-)

The lone male in our August session, Mike Bourn, missed out on the sock photo opp, but I captured him snuggling my puppy - and reading an empowered excerpt from his manuscript.  Calypso, my miniature dachshund, fell asleep in Mike's arms BEFORE he started reading.

Early Morning:

Betty Booher, master oboist, treated us to mellifluous morning music.

Marvelous. Magnificent. Motivating.

Late Night, After 11:00PM:

Some IMC'ers head to the lodge (and sleep) by 9:00'ish. Here's a close-up of one of the keep-on-working IMC'ers hands (Cindy Kiel), manuscript page, and Sangria.

Here's the rest of Cindy Kiel,  attorney, Assistant Vice Chancellor, and oh-so-fun-loving camera-ham.

Angela Foster, Usha Menon, and Maggie Lynch dig deep into Deep Editing to make their manuscripts page-turners.

Margie's June and July Smiles!

LUCKY ME!  Three amazing writers have visited me on the mountain this summer, Toni McGee Causey, Anna Campbell, and Lila Dipasqua. These friends are as talented as they are fun and zany.

TONI MCGEE CAUSEY

Toni is one of my high-energy ITW / RWA friends. Her SWAT Team son joined us one night and we talked him into showing-and-telling his weapons. These pictures make it look like we're personifying one of Toni's book titles:

GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE GUNS

Look at Toni's I-love-guns smile. She's weapon-happy. I'm loving it too!

PHOTO: sniper rifle

The sniper rifle could make a heck of a unique centerpiece for my table.

It could be a heck of a conversation-starter and conversation-ender too.

PHOTO: Red Rocks Amphitheatre

My super-pilot-husband took us flying over Boulder and the foothills the next day. We flew over one of my favorite attractions, Red Rocks Amphitheater. This visual and acoustic wonder was completed in 1941 and seats over 9000.  You'll see more pictures of the Red Rocks Amphitheatre (below) in the section on Lila Dipasqua's visit.

ANNA CAMPBELL

I met the never-too-serious Anna Campbell two years ago when I presented in Australia. Anna came all the way from Brisbane, Australia to stay with me in Denver . . . before attending RomCon. :-))

PHOTO: Anna_Campbell and Margie in Estes Park, CO

We'd planned to tale Anna flying, but the weather nixed our plans. See the white sky in these pictures? The front range welcomed Anna with a massive storm system.

We went to Plan B.  We toured Golden, Eldorado Canyon, Boulder, and Estes Park by SUV. Notice Anna is smiling -- with her hand Anna_Campbell_shopping_WinCEon that gold-miner's rear. :-)

The top two pictures were taken at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park where THE SHINING was filmed.  Here's Anna shopping in Boulder. She shopped in three towns and one canyon. We enjoyed a scrumptious late and leisurely lunch at the Stanley Hotel before hitting the mountain highway to take Anna to her fans at RomCon.

LILA DIPASQUA:

I cyber-met Lila in an on-line class several years ago, then met her in person in Canada. She invited me to present a master class for Toronto RWA.  Lila also came to Denver for RomCon -- and stayed with me after the conference. We toured Red Rocks Amphitheatre by car. Here's how it looks from the ground.

Story structure is like a suspension bridge: if the parts aren't working together, the whole thing will collapse. But get structure right from the start, and half your work as a novelist or screenwriter is done.

What you'll learn:

  • The Three Act model and why it works
  • The Doorways of No Return that compel readers to read on
  • The importance of the opening disturbance
  • The key to making conflict work
  • Secrets for crafting a knock-out ending

How does the critique work?
The live audio is delivered over your telephone or computer speakers. The Power Point presentations and desktop or document sharing are presented over the Internet. This is like a talk-radio program with visuals on the Web. You'll be able to have a live Q&A chat with the speakers.

Who should attend?

  • Novel-length fiction writers
  • Screenwriters
  • Creative writing instructors

The Buzz About Margie

In the twenty years I've been writing fiction, two teachers have astounded me with their insights and taught me something radically new:  Dwight Swain and Margie Lawson. Margie has made an enormous splash among novelists with her Deep Editing class and her Empowering Character Emotions class.  I absolutely love her work. After reading Margie's material on nonverbal communication and empowering character emotions, something clicked in my brain.  Fiction is about giving readers a powerful emotional experience. Margie taught me a new ways to empower my writing.
