Creating Anthologies Easily The Smart Way

Anthologies are the "hot" item lately, giving authors a chance to collaborate and create amazing themed books. The writing side is usually pretty easy for an author, but what about all the details? A partnership can be a real problem if the business side isn't addressed.

This class, taught by an author/editor who has published numerous anthologies and collections, will go into the nitty-gritty of the "back side" of publishing anthologies, including:

  1. Who's in charge?

Setting up parameters about who does what can keep most disputes from ever happening

  1. Legal and financial stuff

Contracts, who gets paid what, and creating a legal entity isn't hard but so important!

  1. Setting up a theme/connection between the stories

What holds the stories together?

  1. Eliciting writers

Who do you want to be in your anthology? How do you decide the criteria?

  1. Layers of editing – who does it?

Someone has to make sure the book is as good as it can possibly be

  1. Stylistic considerations – cover, binding, page count, go/no go.

Getting half-a-dozen or more writers on the same page can be the most difficult part

  1. Publishing considerations

How to publish? Where to publish? How to get books on the shelf?

  1. Marketing considerations

What needs to be done? How do you get everyone involved?

Anthologies are worth the trouble, and the benefits can be enormous. It just takes a little planning.
