This power-packed class provides writers with hands-on tools for making character descriptions fresh and deep and powerful.
We’ll cover:
This class is interactive. You’ll write and edit and finesse character descriptions.
You’ll learn how to make your character descriptions as dynamic as your characters.
Margie Lawson left a career in psychology to focus on her true passion—helping writers make their stories, characters, and words strong. Tired of the same old writing rules and tools? Try something new.
Using a psychologically based, deep-editing approach, Margie teaches writers how to bring emotion to the page. Emotion equals power. And power not only grabs readers, it holds onto them until the end. Many Margie grads have gone on to win awards, find agents, sign with publishers, and hit bestseller lists.
As an international presenter, Margie has taught over 150 full day master classes in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and France, as well as multi-day intensives on cruise ships in the Caribbean. Pre-COVID, she taught 5-day Immersion Master Classes across the U.S. and Canada and in seven cities in Australia too.
COVID Update: Immersion Master Classes are now virtual, taught through Zoom. Virtual Immersion classes are limited to six writers. They're two days long with two big topics--and as always, writers get one on one deep editing with Margie.
She also founded Lawson Writer's Academy, where you’ll find over 30 instructors teaching online courses through her website. To learn more, sign up for Margie’s newsletter.
Characters can be Described in physical (the eyes, the hair, the face, the clothes), in action and emotion (the angry punch, the pain-filled scream), through their own eyes or by another character.
Margie Lawson provides a wonderful set of "Rules" guiding these descriptions, and then through already-published excerpts, and the tweakings of students' own submissions, illustrates how these rules, and the art of Deep Editing Analysis, empowers and enriches descriptions.
This class is definitely one to take. I am so glad I did.
Yes this course is all about your character descriptions, but will deliver to you so much more!
Sometimes it takes a couple of tweaks by Margie and the characters jump right out like how you imagined.
Its like magic - She knows where you want to go and shows you how to get there!
You have to put the effort in, but the rewards are just stunning, polished.
I've never been so inspired to work with my characters.
Margie's courses are always blockbusters and Not Your Moma's Character Descriptions is no exception. Her techniques showed me how to elevate character descriptions to a much higher level. It's just another example of why she's still my favorite instructor.
I knew this course would be great because Margie is the teacher. I didn't know that I could come out with my approach to character descriptions completely transformed. Hard work? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely! I'm so glad I decided to take this course, I've learnt loads, applied it to my WIP as part of the assignments and I know I'm going to keep using these techniques in future. If you're sitting on the fence, just do it.
My philosophy on writing character descriptions was to leave it up to the reader’s imagination.
Not any more. All that’s changed after taking Not Your Mama’s Character Descriptions from Margie Lawson.
I learned that descriptions are an essential writer’s tool. Descriptions dig deep into a character’s heart and soul. Descriptions are more than eye color, or physical traits, or clothes.
Do you want to slip in backstory? Do it with character descriptions.
Do you want characters that explode off the page? Do it with character descriptions.
Do you want to write unique characters readers will remember? Do it with character descriptions.
Not Your Mama’s Character Descriptions is a fantastic experience that will get you excited about writing all over again.
