Powerful pacing drives readers through page after page, from the first to the last. It makes readers keep turning pages, makes them stay up late to finish your book.
You know how critical it is to keep your story moving. But when it’s your well-chosen words, your beautiful scenes, it’s tough to know how to pick up pace, how to make that magic happen.
Join me on March 6 or March 7, and I’ll share my seven musts and lots of other goodies too.
Some are lickety-split quick and oh-so-easy, others require a little more time. But they’ll all make you glad you got my detailed list, learned why these things work, and know how to use them. You’ll make your book a page-turning read!

Margie Lawson left a career in psychology to focus on her true passion—helping writers make their stories, characters, and words strong. Tired of the same old writing rules and tools? Try something new.
Using a psychologically based, deep-editing approach, Margie teaches writers how to bring emotion to the page. Emotion equals power. And power not only grabs readers, it holds onto them until the end. Many Margie grads have gone on to win awards, find agents, sign with publishers, and hit bestseller lists.
As an international presenter, Margie has taught over 150 full day master classes in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and France, as well as multi-day intensives on cruise ships in the Caribbean. Pre-COVID, she taught 5-day Immersion Master Classes across the U.S. and Canada and in seven cities in Australia too.
She also founded Lawson Writer’s Academy, where you’ll find over 30 instructors teaching online courses through her website. To learn more, sign up for Margie’s newsletter.
This is the third of Margie’s Lecture series that I’ve investing in since I discovered her (Thank you Becca.) And, not to should on you, but… these are literarally the best litarary writing courses I’ve found. (see what I did there, Margie?) Margie explains how to power-up your writing clearly and simply and uses repetition and rhetorical devices and so many chills-up-the-arms-good examples that the info sticks like velcro. I’m talking that decorators kind of velcro you practically need two hands to pry off…. you know the kind.
Highly recommend for anyone who believes that while, yes, you should “murder your darlings,” powerful writing should always survive.
This was one of the best classes on character development I’ve ever taken! There is so much information and none of it is wasted or fluff. You will get to the meat and bones of your characters – all of them! And Rhay is a great teacher and so helpful!!
Creating tension is essential in every genre to write a compelling novel. It encompasses suspense and conflict, can be create compelling characters, make use of visceral reactions and often feels so reliant on puzzles that it is a bit of a conundrum in itself (at least that’s how I experience attempting to craft it). Sarah (Sally) Hamer is such an encouraging and enthusiastic teacher, I think I would have got lost/ given up without her support and I’m SO glad I did this course. My biggest takeaway is to think of tension in terms of patterns – tracking the rise and fall of conflict around relationships, characters and theme as well as through structure in terms of scene and sequel. I gained a lot of tools to use as I write forward as well as ways to create a cascading motion throughout the text. Thank you so much to Sarah for her help. There is so much material packed into this course and I am so glad I did it with Sarah’s support.
I always wondered how authors weaved the motivation and the why throughout the story so effortlessly, and after taking Sarah’s class, I can see how they do it.
I can certainly see myself using the information I learned in Sarah’s class in every story going forward.
If you want to maximize your characters traits/flaws in every scene, this is the course for you.
I found this course enjoyable and it helped improve my writing, by really thinking about the character traits and story arc, etc. Sarah was lovely (and easy) to work with. Highly recommend, as with all Margie classes I have done over recent years.
